The 70th Assembly District, located in Southern Orange County, includes all of the cities of Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, and most of the cities of Aliso Viejo, Newport Beach and Tustin.
The New York Times recently observed that "the political texture of this county, which is larger in population than Nevada or Iowa, is changing, and many officials say it is only a matter of time before many Republican officeholders get swept out with the tide." The 70th Assembly District is leading this profound political change: in 2008, President Obama won the District by 8,721 votes.
The District has magnificent beaches, a first-class public university and other centers of higher learning, sparkling shopping centers, charming homes, art galleries and theaters, scores of volunteer sports and civic organizations, technological know-how, thousands of small businesses, and wonderful, friendly, hard-working people. It possesses everything needed to realize the California Dream.
But our District has been hard hit by the double blows of the national recession and California’s budget crisis.
Thousands of jobs have been lost in the financial and mortgage industries. Many thousands of jobs have also been lost in real estate and construction. Home values have plummeted and foreclosures are still rising.
Our public schools are cutting teachers and services, putting our children at risk. The University of California, Irvine, and Irvine Valley College are facing draconian cuts. University and community college students are seeing classes cancelled and their fees rise, often beyond what they can afford. Public safety is being compromised by cuts to our police, sheriff, and fire departments.
The District is also home to large retirement communities, which have suffered from the economic crisis and from severe cuts in state services to seniors, including essential home health care services.
Melissa will bring to the Assembly a passionate commitment to solving these problems, putting the interests of the people of our community first.
She will foster local economic growth, support responsible funding of our schools, and make sure that government serves the people and improves the lives of the District’s residents. She will fight to renew the California Dream.
